Armed with a philosophy that says, ‘music is life and is not to be taken lightly’, entertainer Black Ice is a shining star among Jamaica’s many musical soldiers, one of those who believe music can make positive change as the art form can transcend the human experience. Describing his music as being positive, uplifting and inspiring yet edgy and real, Black Ice believes his inspiration comes from a higher calling.
Black Ice, born Gary Palmer, is Jamaican-born but resides in the United States from where he has been steadily carving out a niche of his own. He has had great success sharing the stage with popular Jamaican acts that include Luciano, Toots & The Maytals, Freddie McGregor, Junior Reed and Gyptian, among others. Recent most memorable performances include one with Captain Barky on the US East Coast and in Long Beach California, an electrifying stint as he shared the stage with recording artists Junior Reid and Gyptian at Earth Strong 2012.
While the bulk of his performances have largely been confined within the borders of the United States, Black Ice is now taking his music to the world.

From his very first recording back in 1999, Black Ice has been on a steady climb. After his very first single “Enemies” featuring Rootsman (Yard Groove Records) debuted, he released an album, Deliver Me (Yard Groove Records) in 2002 that featured solid tunes like “Deliver Me”, “Who Jah Bless”, “Jah Live”, “Careless Whisper”, “Black Woman” and “LovIjah”.
Also in 2002 he performed on the album Lasta Sound that featured songs like “Tekur Set” (Ethiopian for Black Woman) and “Prophecy.” A music video for the song “Black Woman” and a featured live performance in the movie Journey to Lasta (2002) were also notable achievements that year.
He recorded a smash hit “Onward” in 2006 for Unseen Lab Recordings. The song would later feature on the soundtrack of the movie Out the Gate.
Black Ice was born in Jamaica to parents Lillian Albertha Chambers and Irvin Anthony Palmer and grew up in the small Jamaican community of Battersea, St. Ann on Jamaica’s north coast. While still very young his family migrated to the United States to Hillside, New Jersey. His education was of primary importance and attended Walter O. Krumbiegel Middle School (Hillside New Jersey) and Hillside High. He then joined the US Navy for four years before attending Long Beach City College and then Long Beach State University where he studied Engineering.
In all this time however, music was always an integral part of his upbringing. Members of his family held dances and other musical events in which he had always shown keen interest. Growing up he loved listening to music, all genres, but there were a few musicians who had a great influence on him. The late musical legends Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh and Marvin Gaye are among those who helped inspire him towards a career in music.
