With a combination of powerful lyrics paired with driving beats, Metropolis Blac’s work is nothing short of anthemic.
Tony D. Roby was born on Chicago’s Westside, before moving to the Bronzeville neighborhood, a famed area that was commonly known as “The Black Metropolis.” The moniker Metropolis Blac is a tribute to his upbringing. Cutting his teeth on artists like Jay-Z, Ice Cube, and Notorious B.I.G., his ear stayed tuned to the sounds of struggle, and his vision focused on images of survival.
His evolution into hip-hop came from pure altruism, wanting to help a friend and producer push his tracks to artists. “The production was dope! I heard these beats and composed some lyrics to put over them so he could sell them.” A true partnership was formed with the two spending hours in the studio churning out tracks, including his forthcoming “Summer Sessions” EP.
His lyrics tell a powerful story: one of real life growing up in Chicago, injustice in America, and the eternal struggle of winning and losing. “Music chose me. It was the most natural struggle I ever conquered. It's so real and so me. Music gives me freedom.” As an artist, Metropolis Blac seeks to find true freedom in performing, living and creating. “My music is about the people. It’s for the people. I want to inspire them to be successful and find joy and fulfillment.”
But there is more to Metropolis Blac than just cunning wordplay. In addition to honing his craft as an artist, he is passionate about on youth mentorship, health education, and financial independence in and around Chicago. His aims to give back to the community that has supported him. “I want to build a brand that can spark many other enterprises: film, clothing, tech, etc. People want to be millionaires. I want to make millionaires.”
His thoughts are on another level, approaching life’s themes with positivity and a consciousness that is not of this world. His personal motto is the message that he strives to share with the world and lives every day: "T.H.E. E.N.D. : Transfer Happiness Everywhere... Energy Never Dies."
