Though it might sound like a throwback to the early noughties, Trigg da Kid’s new number Shake Dat Ass is very much about the modernity. The up-and-coming rapper and hip-hop prodigy from Detroit sets out a convincing mission statement with this number, a tight and brisk three-minute number that benefits from a few listens. While it’s not initially the most groundbreaking song we’ve heard all year, it’s more than meets the eye, with playful vocal twists making up a good part of the accompaniment. It doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, hitting straight up into an unobnoxiously catchy chorus and the jewel in the crown of the number-a criminally short bridge. It might not be much to look at on first glance, but wit, persistence and a swift exit turn this into a decidedly convincing single for Trigg da Kid.
