Common's "Kingdom" featuring Vince Staples is absolutely a hip-hop testament, but it could just as easily find its way into a church, albeit for hard knocks. "Kingdom's" hook features a church choir and the chant "Ah yes, my lord," which serves to concrete the idea behind the track all the way to the end. For Common and Vince, religion has had to fall by the wayside due to a life in streets of crime, where surviving made everything else unimportant. As for Common, he doesn't deny that he's done some bad things, but he feels they were due to his situations coming up, and he doesn't want his kid experiencing the same thing. So that deserves forgiveness, right? God, lemme in. Vince seems to be a bit more accepting of the fact that he doesn't have a chance past the pearly gates, but he also feels like he had no choice. Welcome to the church of hip-hop, the real gospel.
