The song begins with beautiful summertime chords; bright yet soulfully nostalgic. A warm rose colored voice slowly walks onto the track. It feels romantic, then you listen closely to the lyrics and you hear, “Desert got water like a n#a got time. Wait hold that thought, I got money on the line… No Love Love Love”. This is Ludy and she calls her unapologetic music, “Trill RnB”. Trill, coined by Eric Charon aka ‘Sir Trill’, means to be ‘true to oneself and real to all’. Marry those lyrical sentiments with a mix of alternative r&b, trap, and cinematic lean and you have a description of Ludy’s newly released EP, Elephant in the Room. Currently best described as a tom-boy Lemonade, but a lot more concerned with the love of money and grind. So there’s no “Becky”, just in your face classic R&B melodies with a dope boy understanding of the world.
She was born Dorea “Ludy” in Dearborn Michigan. Her family later moved to the St. Louis, MO where Ludy grew up listening to The Isley Brothers, Sade, and Anita Baker. In 2012, the singer packed everything she owned and moved to Miami, FL to seriously pursue her music career. While working with music producer Joe “Capo” Kent, a St. Louis native, who has worked with Nelly and Trey Songz; she met songwriter, Sandy Scribbles. Scribbles is a writer that came up under the Flo Rida regime.
The pair formed a musical partnership and released Ludy’s very first “prelude” project Escapade in 2014. It featured production from well-known Miami, producers Audio Jones, Midus Hernandez, and The Dope Boyz. “I was getting my feet wet, learning how to record, getting comfortable on the mic. just finding my voice and what I really wanted to say in the music.” she said in a Strong Arm Radio interview in early 2016. Ludy then released a few remixes; including a very memorable remix of the Hip Hop Legend Notorious BIG’s ‘Warning’, with ‘A Night Track’ from Zero 7 and Roots Manuva called ‘Fly Paper’. You can check out the DIY video, shot and edited by the pair on Ludy’s YouTube Channel. [make that a link]
And that’s the magic. There is no record label. There is no management. It’s just two girls. The duo calls themselves “The We$” a mantra for “We the People”. Their mission statement has been to do what it takes to deliver to the people, for the people, because it’s by people. Scribbles alongside Ludy wrote and executive produced both projects, edited all of the videos and created all the cover artwork for the Escapade project as well as the first single from Elephant in the Room, “Veronica”. The two even co-edited Ludy’s latest video release for “Ova”, a track produced by Ronnie “Rajeo” Allen, and co-directed it with Aplusfilmz.
Ludy is currently working on a deluxe edition of Elephant in the Room and treatments for more visuals for the project. This time around she wants to show growth and her will and ability to provide quality content that easily stands beside industry majors even though it was put together with “tape and bubble gum” as she would describe.
You can watch Ludy and The We$’s progress by subscribing to her YouTube channel, following her on Instagram, snapchat, and twitter by searching: @wheresLudy. Her latest video, “Ova” delivers on the promise of standing with the majors and it has a soft plot twist that will definitely raise eyebrows.
