While many artists perform under an alias or stage name, EJ maintains the name he has been affectionately called all his life by friends and family, this is just one indication of how ‘real’ he is. EJ is the type of guy, to wear a Blazer and Kangol to a show one night, and a white Tee and jeans the next night. He’s also the type of artist, to record an impeccable verse mainly from memory mixed with freestyling, while others have to recite theirs from a piece of paper. Basically, EJ’s not your average guy, or your average artist.
EJ was raised on Warwick Avenue, a legendary street in a tough West Baltimore neighborhood. He spent the latter part of his childhood traveling back and forth from East and West Baltimore, while living with his Grandmother in the infamous Somerset projects. Growing up, New Year’s eve parties thrown by his father provided the stage for his first performances. Instead of popular records by Marvin Gaye, or the Stylistics, the adults relied on young EJ to entertain them.
EJ officially began rapping in 1991With assistance from influential neighborhood friends Fat Ninny and Fatz, EJ released “The Tester” (the Red and Black) cd, produced solely by the nationally acclaimed Producer DJ Class. This cd sold 15k units in the streets, with minimal publicity. Due in large part to the hood success of his first solo release, EJ became a local legend known for his enthusiasm and presence on records. He has since then collaborated with many of Baltimore’s up and coming artists, his presence being felt significantly on every track he’s featured on.
It didn’t take long for EJ to realize he was not only a talented rapper; he was also a gifted songwriter. EJ began to work with various R&B artists as well as other rap artists to provide catchy hooks, and song concepts. EJ has also worked with Stay Gettin’ Productions, who have produced for National artists such as: Cam’Ron, Kay Slay, Jim Jones, Bow Wow, and many more. Bloodline Records and Murder Inc. both showed interest in signing EJ, before each company experienced financial difficulties.
In 2006, EJ defeated all of the previous Stylewars (the largest freestyle battle in Baltimore city history) winners, to be named the Stylewars Champion. This acclaimed win, led to interviews and song placements on WEAA 88.9, 105.7, WYPR, and 92Q. In addition to his solo release, EJ has been featured on numerous mixtapes and DVDs, all of which have assisted with creating an enormous demand for more music from this talented artist. EJ released his follow-up cd “The Westside Hustle” in early 2009, and has already pushed 3k units in the streets. 2010 is off to a great start. EJ has opened up for national recording artists like Yo Gotti, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. With his unique flow, style and charisma, EJ is ready to take the world by storm, one city at a time. First stop….Baltimore!!!!
