DJ MoonDawg is one of the country’s premier DJs who will never forget where he comes from. Born and raised in Chicago, he makes it his mission to encourage and promote local artists while continuing to promote his staple brand, “Get In Tune! Stupid.”
At age 17, DJ MoonDawg enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served for five years, three of which were spent on special assignment with the U.S. State Department. He was stationed in various countries around the world and saw combat while posted to the U.S. Embassy Monrovia, Liberia during the 2003 Civil War and siege on the capital city. Because of his heroic actions, DJ MoonDawg was highly decorated and awarded one of the U.S. State Department’s highest awards, the Superior Honor Award, he also received Letters of Appreciation from the U.S. Ambassador, a Humanitarian Service Medal, the Naval Achievement Medal, and a Naval Unit Commendation among others.
Upon his completion of duty from special duty assignments with the U.S. State Department at the American Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia and in Kingston, Jamaica, DJ MoonDawg returned home to Chicago to study political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). It was there that he developed an interest in DJing and radio after discovering the university had a radio station. He began his radio career with a Hip-Hop music show on UIC Radio that became widely popular for pushing and promoting local artists, news, and events. His ambition and desire to do more within radio led him to become the Marketing Director after only 3 months with the station. As the buzz of his radio show continued to grow, DJ MoonDawg decided he would begin releasing mixtapes to further promote himself, his radio show, and local artists. It wasn’t long until he became one of the most sought after mixtape DJs in the Midwest, after releasing mixtapes with Chicago A-list artists Bump J, Lupe Fiasco, and Twista, just to name a few. With less than one year spent with UIC Radio, DJ MoonDawg had become the Program Director (PD) for the station and became the Def Jam Records College Representative for Chicago. He successfully orchestrated “meet & greet” appearances and on air interviews with artists like Fabolous, Rick Ross, Rocko, Bobby Valentino, and many more. It during this period, while PD of the station, that DJ MoonDawg lead UIC Radio to two consecutive “Best College Radio Station” awards at the Chicago Music Awards. This would mark the first time UIC Radio, and the university itself, would be recognized for its work in the field of broadcast journalism.
DJ MoonDawg’s passion and love for radio would drive him to do more in the field, so in his senior year at UIC, he obtained an internship at 107.5 WGCI-FM, one of the country’s leading urban contemporary radio stations. It was at WGCI that DJ MoonDawg got his “break” into commercial radio when, 2 months into his internship, he was offered a position as On-Air Personality/Mixer. DJ MoonDawg and his “Get In Tune! Stupid” brand hit the airwaves with a popular weekend Mixshow that was highly rated and extremely popular. As the Mixshow continued to receive great ratings throughout DJ MoonDawg’s first year with WGCI, he was offered his current weekend afternoon shows every Saturday & Sunday 2-6pm.
It should be noted that DJ MoonDawg’s ability to pick “the next big artist” has garnered him widespread recognition and respect within the music industry. He is responsible for discovering, breaking, and supporting Chicago artists Chief Keef (Interscope), Lil Durk & Lil Reese (Def Jam), King Louie (Epic), and YP (Universal) on his radio show, in his mixes, and by hosting artists mixtape releases. DJ MoonDawg remains highly sought after for his mixtape work, he DJs throughout the country, and as he moves into the arena of producing and creating his own music, DJ MoonDawg keeps rising in the music industry. He refuses to be confined to just one avenue and will continue to build and expand his visibility and brand to ensure everyone will “Get In Tune, Stupid!”
