Destilux Interview

Breakbeat is not for the faint of heart. The melodies, the drops, and of course, the beats, are all adrenaline rush inducing. The genre is unforgiving on the dance floor and will hijack your body's natural rhythm, whether you're ready or not. One DJ and producer who has been in sync with the wild nature of Breakbeat is Destilux. The young Spanish artist took home the Best Breakthrough Producer last year at the International Breaks Awards and came in third for the Best Breakthrough DJ (both in the National category). But there's no slowing down for Destilux. It's only a matter of time before he's in the conversation for Best DJ and Producer, in the International category.

Destilux's story starts in a city called Camas, which is situated in Seville, Andalusia. He was born Sergio Destilux in 1993. For him, growing up in Spain was nothing out of the ordinary. He related that his childhood was "full of great moments that inspired me everyday." He also informed us that Breakbeat is the most listened to music in the southern region of Spain. As a result, he was drawn to drums and the break sounds in general as a kid. Aspirations of becoming a significant figure in the world of Breakbeat started to take shape at an early age. He just didn't know that those dreams would come true sooner than later.

Lucky for Sergio, his parents provided moral support for him, which he realizes is a fortunate advantage in itself, since adults of their age aren't typically going to Breakbeat parties. This feeling of comfort from his parents allowed him to focus and work hard in the studio. When we asked him about what inspires him when creating new music, he gave an interesting and telling answer about his work ethic:

"I am not a big fan of inspiration. I think that the real answer for making anything artistic is the hard work. The muses can run away but the time that you spent learning and working in a track always [remains] in my laptop at the end of the day. That’s the only thing that matters at the end, isn’t it?"

Whether you agree with Destilux or not, his work proves that there's at least some kind of truth to his belief. He's put out music through a plethora of labels over the years, due to the fact that he's been able to keep his sound fresh from song to song. If you run through his discography, you'll experience relatively relaxing Tropical tinged breakbeats ("Funk Punk"), ones that could signify impending doom in an Action movie ("Deepthroat"), more House oriented james ("Nasty Swing"), and last but not least, the hard hitting hits that fuel the nights that become days ("Wet Pussy"). We didn't even touch on remixes either. His take on other artists' tracks are refreshing and feel like they trigger a different part of the brain the original ones never even imagined.

All of this comes into fruition from his goal of making his fans feel "clear happiness." As for the vocals he chooses, the only way he can describe what he looks for is a certain type of "flow." When he plays out his music at live sets, although he prefers recording new music in the studio, he still goes all out since "each thing has its magic. It is my job and I love it so what else can I ask for?" Our thoughts exactly, Sergio. The dedication to his craft earned him his Best Breakthrough Producer last year at the International Breaks Awards. When he received the news, he started to cry. A lot. The overwhelming feeling of recognition for his work over the years took over his emotions just like he aims to do with his music every time for his listeners.

As we look forward to the rest of 2016, Destilux will "try to be better than this year [2015] and give the best of myself, as I always try to do." Here's to more happy tears and great music!
