Show and Prove with Deejay Irie

When you hear a Rastafarian say, "Irie," it should impart a positive feeling upon you. After all, it roughly translates from Jamaican patois to "feeling great" or "excellent; highest." So you can safely assume that Deejay Irie will have you feeling just right when he takes to the turntables. But there's a pleasant twist--he's adept at integrating a video element to his sets. As we mentioned earlier in our special edition of Show and Prove this week with DJ Brace, the first Visual DJ part of the World DMC's just wrapped up and Irie came out on top (Brace finished 2nd). The Brazilian Cinematic DJ who now lives in the Netherlands has been featured before on our site but this time he gets to showcase his ability to take DJing to a new level on his own.

While we pointed out the merit in DJ Brace's entry earlier this week, DJ Irie takes a more narrative approach with his routine by telling a story of Hip-Hop. Not only does he cover some classics from the genre but also airs out some concern about the direction that the culture has gone in, specifically the more ratchet one. Although you don't see him at the turntables, he mixes in the speech samples from several comics with the music videos they describe in a seamless way. Irie even rearranges an interview with President Obama into his own cover of 50 Cent's "I Get Money." He then takes the bit about Lil Jon's "Get Low" as an opportunity for a scratch clinic. Hearing someone's educated opinions on a topic was never so entertaining. It also didn't hurt that Loop Skywalker and Mr. Switch praised the set at the end of the video.
