We've been on a roll with finding group DJ routines and figured why stop with Battlestar last week? This week we have the self proclaimed "UK's No. 1 Turntablist Party-Rocker," DJ Angelo, and 2012 DMC Online World Champion, DJ Fong Fong. Angelo is one of those DJs who pushes the boundaries of what defines a DJ for most people, incorporating turntablism elements into a party set. Angelo was born in Burma and raised in the UK, practicing first on a set of homemade turntables. And now he travels the world to perform, curates content for several brands, creates viral tutorial videos, and represents DJ brands as an ambassador. There is not much information on French DJ, Fong Fong, other than that he often collaborates with other DJs on routines and that he took home the DMC title in 2012 for his online routine.
After the two DJs introduce each other with recorded drops, they immediately get into some quick scratches and not just on their respective turntables but each others'. The level of practice and comfort with each other is apparent as they share the cross-fader back and forth. After the standard merry go round of scratching, they do a beat juggle together in rapid succession. Angelo then goes into a short scratch session before Fong Fong follows but with the channel fader. As they then use both the cross and channel faders, they improvise a new song altogether. Rick Ross' "Hustlin'" comes on next as they take turns scratching a "fresh" sample on the same deck. It's impressive how they make two DJs scratching sound like one as one is on the turntable and the other mans the fader, especially with the manual echo effect (2:52). They close out with a short MPC segment and more shared scratching. There's rarely a moment when either of them is doing nothing. They took techniques that would be easier to do with one person and stretched their imagination to see how they could make it better with two.
