Show and Prove with DJ Sara

You may have seen or heard about DJ Sara already, if you've been diligently scouring the internet for scratch videos. The Japanese DJ started learning her way around the turntable at 3. In 2007, when she was around 8 and her younger brother, Ryusei, was around 5, they put out a two and a half minute video of them taking turns scratching. And it was crisper and more technical than a lot of professionals' routines. Fast forward to 2015 and Sara is now 16 and showing that her potential may be greater than we had anticipated. It'll be a wonder if she doesn't take home a DMC title sooner than later.

What's special about this Show and Prove today is that it's a rare glimpse into the practice and creative time for a DJ. You'll notice that she repeatedly does the same scratch rhythm with the same sample, more to nail down the nuances than to present it as a final product. You can see the natural progression of what her mind is thinking like when she keeps the same cross fader movements but switches up the record hand to create a different scratch. At times there is a control record playing an instrumental and at times it's just DJ Sara going ham "acapella." The presence or absence of a background track may bring out different rhythms in her technique. The most impressive aspect of this almost nine minute clinic is how clean each scratch is, even the impossibly fast ones, when you consider that this is just "practice."
