This slice of slow hip-hop is Spirit XIII’s homage to this essential underworld accessory. Trap Phone is a story of a young black man growing up in a poor part of town, turning to crime to feed himself. The atmosphere is claustrophobic. It’s heartfelt and affecting, and demands repeated listening. Spirit XIII’s sweet, tuneful singing betrays the tragic nature of the story. Drop this at the beginning of the night and watch the heads start to nod.
