It's a shame that China still has such restrictive laws against internet access and other facets of daily life. Even though they have the largest number of people who use the internet (649 million which is twice as many as America), they still don't experience Facebook, Twitter, or Google the same way we do, if at all. Of course, this seriously affects the youth's exposure to the world and its music. Nevertheless, one DJ symbolizes the hope for the future of DJs in the socialist state. DJ Benny_z is from the city of Tongren in the Guizhou Province. He owns his own studio and has the simple goal of wanting to share the best music with the rest of us. To prove his point, he recorded his 2014 winning set for China's Pioneer DJ Competition on a roof with a great view to boot.
For his five minute set, DJ Benny_z makes use of every feature at his fingertips with the Pioneer equipment. He precisely scratches with the non vinyl platters, juggles with the fader to reinvent the beats, uses triggers that most modern DJs are favoring, and has creative transitions. It's a complete set that makes use of various samples. Somehow, DJ Benny_z has done his homework and, given the opportunity, would pose as a threat to DJs in Western countries. What would he be capable of with infinite access to the history of music like the rest of us?
As mentioned earlier, DJ Benny_z is in the same boat as the rest of China with restricted access to social media that we're familiar with. But he does have a Weibo and WeChat (DJBenny).
