What does passion look like? In the scope of the turntablist scene it can take on many forms. For some, their passion renders them hardened and closed off to the world, singularly focused on winning titles at all costs. For others, turntablism can have more of a spiritual meaning, and they'd much prefer a chill cut session to a contentious battle.
But what if you were to combine the two? Is it possible? Well all you have to do is take a look at the life and times on France's DJ Nelson and you will have your answer. With a hop in his step and a lust for life, this German Born musician who moved to France at age 13 is showing that you can have fun and be a DMC champion at the same time. While so many DJ's play a few parties and think the world theirs, Nelson has remained humble through it all, and his infectious spirit is an inspiration to those who believe that living out a dream is impossible.
After winning a host of titles, he finally took the DMC world championship in 2011. But he hasn't let it go to his head or slow his innovative spirit. He is currently living the dream; Traveling the world, spreading joy and sick sets to appreciative crowds everywhere.
We had a chance to watch Nelson throw down a dizzying showcase at the most recent Tableturns Event in New York City. The cozy audience at the Scratch DJ Academy definitely got schooled to an incredible combination of new and classic techniques. So many incredible things happen through the course of the set, but we were particularly impressed with his button drumming, impeccable transitions across all genres, and ability to work EDM style momentum into the juggles. Overall this is a master class in DJ techniques, modern mixing, and having a damn good time doing it. Big thanks to Nelson and everyone else who came through and made it yet another special event!
