When the Red Bull Thre3style World Finals go down, you better believe that they're pulling out all of the stops to put on a great show. On top of the talent that entered the tournament this year, Red Bull stacked their guest performances with some of the best turntablists around. One of the showcases included a 10 minute set from DJ Kentaro and DJ Craze. If you haven't yet, you can read our full interview with the world famous DJ Craze. As for DJ Kentaro, he was the first Asian to win the DMC World Championship in 2002 and has since since worked with Ninja Tunes, Pressure Sounds, and his own label Endeavor, to put out his own music. Each release has only taken him to higher levels of respect as an artist, all while he's stayed in tip top shape on the turntables. So to have these two DJs on the same stage together was a special treat for the world.
Kentaro starts with the intro to Eric B and Rakim's "Paid In Full," turning it into breakbeat and playing off of the "new value" sample. He does a similar beat juggle with the X-ecutioner's "Let It Bang." Then he switches it up and creates his own rhythm out of a Dubstep track. After a short "Forgot About Dre" remix, Craze and Kentaro take turns at scratching back a Japanese themed track. It quickly turns into a merry go round of beat juggling and body scratches. The crazy part is how fast one of them improvises and the other catches on. So when Craze stays on for his turn to do some scratching on one turntable, Kentaro immediately mans the other one to go back and forth, rapid fire. They get into a groove as each picks a different sample from the original track to meld melody to beat. It's live producing on strictly turntables, ladies and gentlemen. Craze and Kentaro end with another few rounds of bringing the record back before calling it a night. You can only imagine what they can accomplish if they planned out this set together...
