Hopefully by now, you're all familiar with DJ Brace. The talented DJ and producer started a scratch friendly tournament called Close Cuts and the rules are simple: you must have pre-ordered Close Cuts, you must be on a portable turntable setup with any scratch record, you must use a particular Redmist beat, the video length has to be one minute, and it has to be uploaded by 2/1/2016 at noon EST. 4 DJs advance to round 2. With some cool DJ gear and bragging rights on the line, Filippino DJ Kurteek sent in one of our favorite entries thus far. The AsthmaFunK member currently resides in California and has dedicated himself to scratch music since 2005. Since then he's won Who's The King in the "Freestyle Category," Beat4Battle, QSU "3 Click Challenge," and the C2C Bay Area tournament.
The beauty in Kurteek's scratches for this minute set is that they're very rhythmic and ride the Redmist beat very well. He pulls from several scratch samples, from short ones to longer ones, so that he gives himself more material to play around with. Kurteek's doesn't just utilize the world's fastest scratches but also spaces them out with short quick ones to let you appreciate the longer chains. And to hype himself up a little, he throws in a "fresh cut" sample at the very end.
Keep up with DJ Kurteek on his Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube.
