DJ Marvel is one of the lesser documented DJs in the game right now. But he's just as talented as the next guy or girl. We were able to confirm that there are other DJ Marvel's in the world but this one is representing Greece. He made it to the International Finals stage of the IDA that will take place in Poland on December 5th where he will go up against the best of the best from several other countries. For those who are unfamiliar, the IDA (International DJ Association) used to be the ITF (International Turntablist Federation). It is one of the most respect DJ organizations that promotes turntablism around the world. They also host a two part tournament each year to crown the best DJs in the Show and Technical categories.
This entry from DJ Marvel was for the Technical category of the tournament. What made this routine stand out from the other entries was the rhythmic aspect of his scratches that formed around the beat, instead of haphazardly throwing out complex patterns. Marvel also includes little nuances like jerking a platter very quickly at the end of a smooth movement to add an accent. The phrasing overall is easily digestible and yet technically difficult. Although his left hand is generally calm and doesn't have much movement, his right hand puts in work to create all of the fast scratches. Stay tuned to see who takes home the belt at this year's IDA.
