Winning isn't everything. In fact, losing could be more important since it teaches you a number of lessons. And for DJ Spell, it might be the push needed to get him the first place spot this year at the World DMCs. While the New Zealand DJ came in second to Vekked last year at the finals, he has a list of wins already on his side at the New Zealand Red Bull Thre3style, the Australian IDA, and a couple New Zealand DMC legs. He's affiliated with the Ahhliens, Naacals, Zulu Nation, and the Mighty Zulu Kingz. Spell also has worked on a scratch looper app called Flaregate. You can catch some of his original production and mixes when he's not working on a crazy routine.

After stopping and smelling the flowers, DJ Spell starts scratching and altering The Who's "Who Are You." He tweaks the turntable, the pitch, and everything imaginable to make each repetition of the hook unique. He splices in some M.O.P. and other vocal samples to keep the attitude high for the DMCs. Spell continues to tamper with the original Who track by doing the guitar solo his way with masterful control over the platter. Then it's onto Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride." After some quick beat juggles, it's onto a display of scratch dexterity. When he moves into Oingo Boingo's "Weird Science" he mixes his skills of scratching and mixing. After some cross handed techniques, he breaks down the bass section with both turntables.
