When you see something that's rated X, you have one of two reactions. You're either going to walk away from it or be more interested in finding out what it's all about. The latter reaction is expected when you witness DJ X-Rated. The turntablist and producer is a 5 time UK DMC finalist and can boast working with Wu-Tang Clan, Jazzy Jeff, Scratch Perverts, and Missy Elliott among others. He's currently signed to San Francisco's Bomb Hip Hop Records. He's already put out a few projects and plans to release his second album this year. You'll also see him traveling the world as a Native Instruments DJ ambassador.
As much as people expected David Bowie to pass as a result of his fight with cancer, nothing could really make it easier to handle when it actually happened. Since January 10th, the outpouring of love and support for his music has been overwhelming. Among that extended commemoration was DJ X-Rated's tribute set. X-Rated uses Bowie's biggest hit "Let's Dance" as the centerpiece for the set, starting off with some echoed scratches and backtracking. He also plays with the backtracking to make the song sound like it's in slow motion before breaking into a complex beat juggle. X-Rated then shows off his confidence by scratching with one hand and drinking water with the other. Afterwards, he manually chops up the record with the channel fader. He closes out with a manual echo by using the crossfader. David Bowie would be proud.
