Yes, Christmas has come and went. But we're still in the mood of giving! So what better way for us to give than receive, than with a couple great routines from DJ Skillz? Two weeks ago we featured the Scratch Warriors who won the Show section of the IDA Worlds so this week it's only right that we have the winner of the Technical category, DJ Skillz. The French DJ already has plenty of titles in his trophy room (a few French DMC championships as well as French IDA ones), but this one tops them all as a world title. To add to that list of accomplishments, he's also signed to French label, Chateau Bruyant.
While the Show category is literally about putting on a show and entertaining a crowd, the Technical category gets deeper into the turntablism and what a DJ is capable of pulling off. And DJ Skillz did the most with his sets. For the first round, his first half is a hybrid of combining scratches with beat juggling. There is not a single movement that doesn't have a little embellishment, adding to the difficulty of the routine. He then transitions from the fast section to a more relaxed one by fading himself out while spinning the record back a few times. The second half is more scratch oriented and his confidence leads the way to an impressive session. Skillz starts the second round in a similar fashion by beat juggling heavily with quick scratches. But then it moves into a more musical part where he live produces a song with hot keys on the mixer and the turntable. He takes a guitar solo and stretches it out into the grand finale of his set. The speed on these two routines are blinding and make us wonder how fast he can really go if he pushed it.
