The IDA World DJ Championships wrapped up this past week and the Scratch Warriors were named champions of the Show category. The Polish group took out seven other DJs, some of them being groups as well. But they had a little bit of more experience as well as creativity on their side this year. The team was composed of DJ Chmielix (3rd place at IDA 2015 World Scratch Battle), DJ VaZee (IDA 2014 Show Category Champion, 2nd place at IDA 2014 Scratch Category, Red Bull 2015 Thre3style Tokyo Finalist), and Steve Nash & DJ Funktion (2x IDA World Champion 2012 & 2013). If that isn't a stacked team, we don't know what is. They combined turntablism with live production, which created a great show, literally, for the crowd as well as the judges.
The winning set has co-signs from big name DJs like Craze and DJ Jazzy Jeff but that's the least notable part of the routine. What should be noted is the interaction between the DJs on the turntables and Steve Nash & DJ Funktion, the guys on the keyboard and beat pads. Everyone has a go at commanding the drums, melodies, and extra effects for the set and each handles the respective difficulties with style and grace. Early in the set, they all play the same rhythm in sync before branching off again to tackle individual parts. The difference between live parts and pre-recorded ones is indistinguishable, confirming their strong execution. Midway through, the scratching becomes the focus before they move into the final segment, which is a live rendition of "Sweet Child O' Mine." These guys might be one of the best live shows on earth.
