His Story Is History
Steven “Imp The Great” Laws has never won a Grammy-Award, nor is he a platinum, or gold selling recording artist. He is however one persistent mother#_(%_@&.
Born in New York on January 26, 1963, Imp is the son of Mabel and Gilbert Laws, a talented war vet who sometimes played the guitar. Both his parents are African American. At an early age Imp ran away to Baltimore to escape his fathers physiological and physical abuse. In 1979 his brother “DJ Flame” came to visit and inspired Imp to start rapping. Before his brother went back to New York Imp had learned mostly all of his rhymes. No one could have guessed that he’d still be rapping almost forty years later.
Within a year Imp had moved to Los Angeles and started working with his first producer Wiz1der. He would rap at every event, venue, cipher, open mic spot that he could find. Over the next few years he would work with DJ Battlecat and Freddy Fred and would become a staple at the open mic workshops “The Good Life” and “The Project Blowed. By pop standards his most notable accomplishments is winning one out of two battle rounds against Eminem in the 1997 Rap Olympics.
By grind standards his notable accomplishments include writing, producing, and recording hundreds of songs and well over twenty albums for himself and other artists on his label “By Any Means Music” (B.A.M.M).
From his first official album release “Old School Vibes” to his last mix-tape “Old Dog New Tricks” Imp has proven that he loves making music and that he won’t be pigeon holed into one style or sub-genre of rap. He pretty much did it all street, gangsta, pop, commercial, underground, love, political, trap, horror, east coast, west coast, dirty south, conceptual, etc.
Imp is prepping to drop an album on July 4, 2018. After years in the game with no major success he’s the last believer in himself and he can probably count his fan support on one hand. To be honest no one seems to like his music or him for that matter. Excuse the cliché but he’s “Cut from a different cloth”. He’s from the true school where it’s Yes! or No! and not much in between.
Can he fail his way to success?
What can a 55 year old man rap about that will interest anyone?
Can he have a massive influence in hip-hop and command the market?
Is he even concerned about the R&B/Hip-Hop Charts?
Imp has had few wins and many losses in his career. He’s at a point in his life where he says “I’m going to focus on me now, take my own advice, believe in me as much as I did other artists, and utilize the game plan I had for them”. Is it to little to late or can he pull off a miracle. Well one thing for sure he’s got the passion, the equipment, the knowledge, and the skills. Personally I don’t like him because he goes against what he knows to be true. He cares too much and it f#@&s with his focus
In order for Imp to reach great heights he’s going to have to work harder then he’s ever worked in his life. He has to make music to shake up the world and give people a unique experience that rap music desperately needs. If you’re a fan of rap music I encourage you to join his email list and stay tuned for the ride. I’ve been riding with him since day one and I got a feeling he’s cooking up something great.
Sincerely Yours
