MICHAEL DAWKINS - The Biography:
Music is certainly a mission for Virgo born Jamaican reggae artiste Michael Dawkins who has been in the music business since the 1980’s. He started out chatting on sound systems in Jamaica where he turned down several request of being a artiste/DJ for sounds. His early years spent in Duhaney Park, Jamaica, saw him rocking community events and fundraisers, the foundation from which his musical craft was honed.
As he blossomed into a talented reggae singer Michael’s confidence and repertoire grew as well. Drawing his inspiration from lovers’ rock, roots rock reggae and rhythm and blues, he was influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Dennis Brown.
In 1982 he met Producer Barry Clark who taught him to write music, as he pursued his career as a singer instead of a DJ. By this time he was in the process of migrating to the USA. This though never deterred him as he used his versatility and musical prowess to continue his musical journey.
His first single "Don't give me no crack" which was released and recorded on the Ruff & Tuff label, entered the chart on 1190 WLIB in 1987; he had a series of singles after that, the title tracks "Assassin" & "Thursday Night",a maxi single, recorded on the Infinity label in 1991 which also gained vast popularity. "Thursday Night" received extensive air play on Irie FM radio, (Ocho Rios, Jamaica) which further gave him much publicity.
In 1994 Michael recorded "Wisdom" on the Top Notch label, which became the theme song on WHCR FM, New York and is still being played. The last release on the Top Notch label was a single "Hold UpYa Hand" with a bonus track titled"Come Have Some Fun" released in 2001; it was well received worldwide on over 500 radio stations, entered the Top Pop 40 chart in Europe and topped many local charts and play lists.
He has shared the stage with some of reggae’s greats such as Shaggy, Ravon, Trevor Sparks, Tippa Lee and Rapper Roberts among others. He has performed in places like on a showcase for the NAACP, Legend, Marcus Hall, Baltimore, Starlight, Vip Hall, Vibez Sports Bar and other distinguished clubs throughout New York City.
Travelling to and from Jamaica, this recording artiste is re-energized; he is ready, as he aims to take the music to higher heights to impact the world in a positive way.
